Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
